Girls Circle Collective

The Girls Circle Collective Project, also known as the GCC project, is working with young girls that are out of school to ensure that they are not left out of our society but instead are empowered.

Initiated in 2021, the GCC project is led by Purposeful, with a total of 5 partners implementing it in various districts nationwide: WOFHRAD (Bombali District), CARL (Western Rural), MUNAFA (Karene District), Dendembeh Federation (Falaba District), and Pekin to Pekin (Moyamba & Bonth District).

The primary target groups of the project are out-of-school adolescent girls aged 9 to 18. The project’s main thematic areas encompass life skills, livelihood skills, safeguarding, literacy and numeracy skills, art and craft, poetry, etc.

The mentor and mentees usually have sessions and a learning place, which we call a safe space, which they use to listen to stories and share their experiences to learn from each other.

Girl Circle Collective has changed the lives of those girls in their communities.

WOFHRAD-SL establishes and oversees 90 clubs/safe spaces, each led by a community-based mentor and accommodating 25 girls per club. These clubs/safe spaces are distributed across 8 Chiefdoms in Bombali district: Ngowahun, Gbendembu, Mara, Safroko Limba, Makarie, Gbanti, Bombali Sieri, and Bombali Sebora.

The staff from WOFHRAD-SL does monitoring on the micro-grants that are given to the girls to do small businesses and to develop their lives. We check whether the mentors have taught the content that was sent to them to the mentees, including topics such as forced marriage, rape, and how to take care of yourself during the period. We also want to know whether they are using the Kobotool to send out their reports.
